Braces Daily Care & Maintenance: Keep Your Smile Healthy During Treatment

While braces are designed to transform your smile, they also create nooks and crannies where plaque and food can accumulate. Consistent daily care prevents cavities, gum disease and unsightly white marks, and helps your treatment finish on time. This article is part of the Reveal Medical Center braces series; if you’re just starting out, read the step‑by‑step procedure guide to understand what happens from consultation through removal. Here we’ll cover brushing, flossing, diet, discomfort management and appointments, then link you to our next article on eating with braces.

Why Daily Care Matters?

Braces introduce hardware that traps food and plaque. Neglecting your oral hygiene can lead to cavities, swollen gums, bad breath and permanent white spot lesions[1]. Maintaining good habits shortens treatment time and ensures your new smile is healthy and stain‑free[1]. Excellent oral hygiene is also important for overall health: infections in the mouth can affect your heart and other organs[2].

Brushing With Braces

Brush after every meal and before bed, ideally for two minutes each time[3]. Carry a travel toothbrush and toothpaste so you can clean your teeth on the go[4]. Follow this sequence for effective cleaning:

  1. Remove elastics and removable appliances[5].
  2. Clean around the brackets and wires. Hold your toothbrush at a 45‑degree angle and gently sweep around the brackets from the top of the wire to the bottom[6]. Spend time ensuring all plaque is removed.
  3. Brush each tooth individually. Angle the brush at the gumline and use small circular motions for about 10 seconds per tooth[7]. Don’t forget the inner and chewing surfaces.
  4. Rinse and inspect your teeth in a mirror[8].

Use a soft‑bristled brush or an electric brush with an orthodontic head. Fluoride toothpaste is recommended to strengthen enamel and prevent decalcification[9]. Change your toothbrush or brush head at the first sign of wear (usually every three months)[10].

Additional tools

  • Interproximal brushes help remove debris between brackets and under wires[11].
  • Water irrigators can flush out food particles but should be used alongside traditional floss[12].
  • Fluoride mouth rinse provides extra protection against white spots; dip your interproximal brush in the rinse for targeted delivery[13].

Flossing With Braces

Floss at least once a day[14]. Use a floss threader or orthodontic floss pick to guide the floss under the archwire and between the teeth[15]. Wrap the floss in a C‑shape around each tooth and slide it up and down 10 times to remove plaque[16]. Many patients find a water flosser helpful for dislodging food, but it doesn’t replace flossing[17].

Diet & Hydration Tips

Your body needs nutritious food to support tooth movement, but braces require a few modifications:

  • Choose soft foods, especially during the first few days after placement or adjustments. Yogurt, mashed potatoes, scrambled eggs, soups, pasta and smoothies reduce irritation[18].
  • Slice hard foods like apples, pears and sandwiches into bite‑sized pieces and cut corn off the cob[19].
  • Avoid sticky, hard, crunchy or chewy foods. These include caramel, gum, nuts, popcorn, crusty bread, pretzels, taco chips, hard candies and toffee[20][21]. Such foods can bend wires or break brackets, prolonging treatment.
  • Limit sugary and acidic drinks. Soda, sports drinks, fruit juice, coffee, tea and red wine can damage enamel and stain teeth[22][23]. Tap water and milk are the safest options[24].
  • Stay hydrated. Drinking water throughout the day helps wash away food particles and neutralise acids.

Managing Discomfort & Emergencies

Mild soreness is common after getting braces or following adjustments. It typically lasts a few days and can be managed with over‑the‑counter pain relievers and soft foods[25]. Rinsing with warm salt water (1 teaspoon salt in 8 ounces of water) can soothe irritated tissues[26]. Orthodontic wax creates a smooth barrier over brackets or wires that rub your cheeks or lips[27].

If a bracket or wire comes loose, or if a wire is poking, call your orthodontist. Broken braces cannot deliver the right forces to move teeth and may prolong treatment[28]. Keep a small emergency kit containing wax, dental floss, tweezers, interproximal brushes, topical anesthetic and pain relievers[29]. Never attempt to bend or cut wires yourself; your orthodontist can provide guidance.

Sports, Music & Social Life

Braces shouldn’t stop you from enjoying your hobbies. Wear a custom mouthguard during contact sports to protect your teeth and braces[30]. Musicians may need a short adjustment period but can continue playing[31]. Embrace your braces with confidence—many people find they hardly notice them after a few weeks[32].

Appointment Schedule & Professional Care

Regular appointments keep your treatment on track. Orthodontic check‑ups are usually scheduled every 6–10 weeks[33], and missing appointments can extend your treatment[34]. Continue seeing your family dentist every six months for cleanings and check‑ups during orthodontic treatment[35][36]. Professional fluoride treatments may also be recommended[36].

Additional Tips for Success

  • Wear elastics or other prescribed appliances exactly as instructed[37].
  • Bring a travel kit (toothbrush, toothpaste, floss, wax and elastics) to school or work so you can clean your teeth after meals[4].
  • Avoid chewing on pens, ice or fingernails—these habits can damage brackets and wires.
  • Quit smoking, as it can stain your teeth and hinder healing.
  • Be patient and consistent; small daily habits create the biggest impact over time[38].
